Korte samenvatting:
It’s a mythical story, with all kinds of mythical beasts, ghosts and human-like creatures. It’s a battle between good and evil who both are fighting for the Ring. Though the ‘good’ are trying to destroy it for their own sake, because as soon as the dark lord, Sauron, recovers the Ring again, it would lead to the destruction of the earth. The task to destroy it was appointed to The Hobbit, Frodo. He must now find his way to Mordor with the fellowship to destroy the Ring before Sauron gets it.

The main character in this part of the trilogy is Frodo. He sets out and starts his perilous journey. I think his most important decision was made at the end. He decides to go on, heading for Mordor, by himself and leaving the Fellowship behind.
Though he didn’t went on alone because his very loyal friend, Samwise Gamgee, didn’t want to leave him out of his sight and jumped in the water while Frodo was crossing the river, planning on continuing his journey alone, and Samwise nearly drowned. Frodo hurried back and pulled him into the boat. From here, they went on together, and Frodo was glad he wasn’t alone.
I think the decision to go on alone was wise and that he took Sam with him was a good idea also. The task of destroying the Ring was appointed to Frodo and it’s important that he can find his own way. Though going on completely alone wouldn’t have been the smartest thing to do. The most dangerous part of his journey lies ahead and I think he wouldn’t have made it without Sam.
I really don’t know what I would have done if I would stand in Frodo’s shoes. A position like that is a little hard to imagine and honestly, I think I wouldn’t have had the courage to go on by myself. Actually, I’m sure I wouldn’t have.

Frodo Baggins, one of the most legendary Hobbits for taking on himself the task to destroy the Ring of Power in the land of Mordor, to keep it from falling in the hands of the enemy, the dark Lord, Sauron.
Frodo has lived in the Shire all his life. He is born on September, the 22nd, 2968. His parents are Primula brandybuck and Drogo Baggins. He spend most of his childhood at Brandy Hall in Buckland, where his mother’s people live. In 2980, when he was still a child, his parents drowned by accident in the Brandywine river. He had no siblings and spend his life in the tunnels of Brandy Hall until his Uncle Bilbo, who is actually his cousin, adopted him and made him his heir. He had a very comfortable life at Bag End with Uncle Bilbo who often went on journeys and visited elves and such. Also Frodo was called an unusual Hobbit, though it was Bilbo who was the adventurer.
Also they were good friends with Gandalf the Grey who came to the Shire every once in a while to visit them. On Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday (both September the 22nd) he came by again and Bilbo went on another adventure the same night. This is where Frodo inherited all Bilbo’s possesions including a Ring. He didn’t know that Ring was going to cause him a lot of trouble, for it was the Ring of Power.
He had to set out with it because the enemy was already looking for it. Merry, Pippin and Sam, his best friends, went along with him. First they reached Bree, where he was supposed to meet Gandalf but met Strider instead, a friend of Gandalf’s. They went on, heading for Rivendell. Along the way they met Dark Riders, Ring Wraiths, Servants of Sauron and they proved to be very dangerous. Frodo was stabbed by one of them and almost died. They reached Rivendell in time, Frodo got cured and he went to a counsil, the counsil of Elrond. Here was decided he would take upon himself the task to destroy the Ring and he formed a fellowship with Gandalf, Merry, Pippin and Sam, Strider (real name: Aragorn), Boromir of Gondor, and the elf Legolas, and a dwarf, Gimli. They set out and came a long way.
They reached the mines of Moria, made by dwarves, and there, fighting a Balrog, they lost Gandalf. Frodo chose to go on alone and head for Mordor but Sam came with him.
That’ll be as far as his story goes in the Fellowship of the Ring.

The lord of the rings
The fellowship of the Ring
I think there aren’t many who haven’t seen The lord of the rings movies. Though I also think there are only a few who have read the books. I have read the book and I’ll tell you why you should do it too. First, I’ll tell you something about the book.
It’s starts with the ancient tale of the Dark Lord Sauron who forged the Ring of Powers. He also had a Ring himself, and that Ring ruled all others. The people of Middle-Earth were defeaten but the last alliance of men and elves marched to Mordor and took on the armies of Mordor. Victory was near but then Sauron came from hiss castle and was defeated by Isildur who took the Ring for himself.
The Ring passed on a lot in the centuries that came. Eventually it became lost in a river where it came to the hands of Gollum. Then, the Ring left Gollum and was picked up by a Hobbit, Bilbo of the Shire. And that’s where this story starts.
In the time to come the Ring will be passed on to Frodo and he needs to take it to the land of Mordor to curse it into the fire of the Mountain where it was forged. He doesn’t need to go alone for a Fellowship was made. They came a long way in this first part of the trilogy.
It’s just a great story, you should agree. Probably you already watched the movie and you have a very good idea of how the story goes and everything looks like. Reading the Book is much cooler then just watching the movies. Frodo has a lot more adventures on the road then you see in the movie.
It’s really owrth it to read a thick book like this. It’s easy to read, you just keep going. You have to like reading though...
Vergelijk de film met het boek.
From all three parts of the trilogy, The lord of the rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien has been made a movie. I have seen all three before reading one of the books. I think it’s better to first watch the movie and then read the book because then it can only get better. If you first read the book you miss a lot of parts in the movie.
Because it’s a very thick book, its harder to make a good movie out of it. You have to cut lots of things to fit it in a suitable length of time. Though the story should be the same so everything that isn’t important enough must be left out.
I really enjoyed reading the book because except from the story, it’s very different then just watching the movie. Its so much more detailed and a lot of moments and characters you don’t see in the movie, you meet in the book. So it’s still very mcuh like reading a book you don’t know.
Another good thing about first watching the movie and then reading the book is that you can really imagine what it all looks like. I think it’s also a lot of fun to use your imagination but with The lord of the rings I think it would have been hard to really be able to imagine it. Especially the characters. I like lots of actors who play in the movies and then you have a better picture of how it all looked like.
There are a lot of differences between the movie and the book but it’s a lot to mention all of them so I’ll just mention a few.
Firstly, before Frodo reaches Bree, he meets Elves. Sam always really wished to see Elves and instead of his first meeting with Arwen, he already saw them on the road to Bree. The Elves gave them some food and invited them to sleep at their campsite. The next morning they were gone.
Another whole chapter that has been left out is Dunharrow. Frodo and his friends were on the road and they had to face the ghosts and dangers at Dunharrow. They were in great danger but they were picked up by Tom Bombadil.
There are also some small things that have been changed.
For example: At the council of Elrond, Bilbo was at present. He even said he would have taken on the quest if he wasn’t too old. They all respected his offer but eventually Frodo took the Ring. At the end of the movie, Bilbo says to Frodo that he wonders what would have happened with his old Ring. It showes he has no idea about the whole war and the quest.
